Mac continued to gaze lustfully into the all-marble bathroom and giant tub that could

easily hold a wedding party of six. As much as she wanted to soak in a tub filled with

bubbles, if she wasn’t to be a complete wreck meeting Joe’s family later, she needed to crawl

beneath those sheets and sleep for at least an hour.

“Shower and sleep,” she said. “I’m on an unstoppable trajectory to get clean and

unconscious.”

“Party pooper.”

He grinned that sexy, promising a good time grin, and she nearly caved. Before Mac

changed her mind, she ducked into the bathroom and shut the door. Locked it. Keeping

temptation out of reach—for her, not him. Tapping her phone, she selected her favorite

playlist and cranked up the volume. Nothing like Freddy Mercury’s soaring vocal plea for

someone to love to set the mood for a refreshing, loooong shower.

Mac sang along—too bad if Joe didn’t like her voice—and took her time under the

steaming-hot jets while Freddy gave way to Madonna, Bryan Adams, and Simple Minds.

Once her fingers started to prune, she relented and got out, pouncing on the free bottle

of expensive body lotion. While Cyndi told the world about girls just wanting to have fun,

Mac finished slathering on the lotion. She’d been a little premature turning down the

opportunity to mess up the sheets with Joe because parts of her were very refreshed.

She flung open the bathroom door, shimmying everything she had, the chorus on her

lips—and met the startled gaze of Joe, beer bottle in hand…and two other men.

One sat on the sofa, the other reclined on their bed, beer balanced on his flat stomach.

Three pairs of eyes locked on her assets, jaws sagged, followed by wide, appreciative smiles

by the two strangers. Joe turned a murderous stare at the two men—who were obviously his

brothers, judging by their same coloring and bright blue eyes.

Mac froze momentarily, like a possum in a hunter’s spotlight, a flight or fight

response kicking in, even though in this case, embarrassment would kill her before the

adrenaline overdose. She bit down on the urge to shriek like a train whistle and slapped an

attitude-infused hand on her waist instead. What was the point of rushing away when men

had a photographic memory for boobs and bums? They’d be retelling this story for years.

“You must be Joe’s brothers,” she said. “Nice to meetcha.” As if she met her

boyfriend’s family bare-assed every day of the week.

“Pleasure is all ours,” said the brother from the bed, lifting his beer in a silent toast.

“I’m Kyle.”

“Luke,” the older of the two men said, from the sofa. “We brought beer.”

Both men, after their initial surprise, met her gaze squarely without their gazes

lowering to her…assets. Now if she could just figure out how to make a graceful exit…

Joe solved the issue by hauling the gold-and- purple bed runner off the comforter and

crossing the room in double time to wrap it around her, using the bulk of his body to block

his brothers’ view.

“Flippin’ hell, Mac,” he muttered, tucking the tail of fabric between her breasts.

His voice was gruff, but not with the chastisement she’d assumed. His face told her he

was caught between laughter, annoyance, and possessive arousal. Suddenly, she wanted the

Whelan brothers gone. Suddenly, she didn’t need a nap, she just needed Joe.

Lindy narrows her eyes at me, and I shake my head.
Maybe it's a good thing. I don't need her to think I'm developing something for her brother...or that I've always had something for him. I squeeze my fists together until my nails bit into my palms. I look up at Kellin.
I don't feel anything different than I've ever felt around him.
He gives me a smile and comes forward to pull me into his arms, tucking his head into my hair. "I missed you, Ree."
I smile as I hug him back, the happiness I always feel around him overtaking any of the odd thoughts I'm having away. He pulls away, looking down at me, and I feel like me.
Just me.
"So why haven't you packed anything?" he asks as he looks around my room, hands in his pockets. He's wearing the heather blue Henley with the hood I bought him for his birthday. He has the sleeves pushed up, and the buttons undone so his tattoos show in all their glory, but he'll be able to hide them if my parents come home.
"I don't know what to bring," I admit.
"You can bring everything if you want," Kellin replies, crossing his arms. "It's our home indefinitely. We don't have to come back for breaks unless we want to."
"Good point...I just don't know where to start," I reply with a shrug.
Kellin gives me a grin, and my skin heats up as our eyes remain locked on each other. I can't look away or stop smiling. I finally turn around, grabbing a box as I chastise myself. This is Kellin-- KELLIN, my best friend's brother. My good friend for four years. He's older. Sexy as hell-- damn it! Off limits, Reese!
I take a deep breath as I feel Kellin behind me.
"Let me give you a hand?" he asks, giving me one of those infectious, crooked-kid-like grins.
"It's an empty box, Kell. I think I can handle it," I reply, nudging him out of the way.
"You sure about that?" he teases, raising an eyebrow at me.
"Ree? You up there?" Mom calls my name, and I look at Kellin frozen as her hand turns the knob to my door.
I jump on his back, pulling down his sleeves as I do and wrapping my arms around his neck to cover his collarbone. Kellin catches my legs and holds me there just as Mom opens the door.
She blinks a few times at us, and I give her a smile.
"Kellin and Lindy came over to help me pack," I say.
"I can see that...but why are you on Kellin's back?" she asks, and I hear Lindy stifle a giggle as Kellin's arms tighten around my legs in panic.
"I was betting him that he couldn't pick me up," I say as I slip one hand under my arm and button the shirt. I slide down his back. "I guess I was wrong!"
Mom looks between Kellin and me before shaking her head. "Well, Reese could really use your help. As you can tell she hasn't even started thinking about moving yet."
"I've been thinking about it. I just haven't done anything yet," I reply.
She rolls her eyes in response. "So I should order a pizza for dinner?"
"That'd be great," Kellin replies as he opens one of my drawers and immediately closes it, placing his hands behind his head as he purses his lips together.
"Found the underwear drawer?" Mom asks as she smirks at him before shutting the door.
Kellin taps his thumbs against his jeans as he looks around the room. "Uh...thanks for that."
I nod as I step past him and open the same drawer and start dropping my bras and underwear into the box in front of him. His eyes find the ceiling as his face turns red. "Really, Ree? You couldn't like wear, I don't know...normal stuff?"
I look up at him as I drop a pair of black lace boy shorts into the box. "What's not normal about them?"
He rubs his face. "You practically wear bags as clothing--and then you wear that underneath?"
I pop my hip out as I lock eyes with him. "Do you like it or something?"
Lindy makes a gagging noise behind him. "Could you guys save the flirting for when I'm not around?"
It's my turn to be embarrassed. I drop the last item into the box and start piling my pajamas, which were pretty close to what I wear every day, on top. Kellin doesn't respond but grabs another empty box and heads to my closet. He pauses, hand on the knob before looking over his shoulder at me.
"Is there anything I need to be cautious of in here?"
I shake my head. "You found the only thing you really wouldn't want to see the first drawer you opened."
Lindy coughs, muttering under her breath, "Who says he didn't want to see it?"
I watch as Kellin's eyebrows twitch, his eyes narrowing on his sister. She shoots him a similar look, and I stand in the middle puzzled.

“Vita!” James is panicked, shaking my shoulders, when my eyes begin to crack open. The bright light violates my pupils, and I slam my eyes shut again. My head is pounding.
“Stop shaking her, boy. We don’t know what damage that could cause.” I relax a bit as my body takes in the grandfatherly voice of wisdom. James’s hands release me. “She’s coming around. Give her a moment.”
I moan, raising an arm to cover my closed eyes. “I’m fine.”
“She could pave a road with those words.” The Old One’s voice gets farther away.
Before I can even wonder what that means, the light mercifully wanes, and I dare to peek out from under my arm. I begin to piece together where I am. The tiny white room. Lying on my monitoring station.
A visibly shaken James is sitting next to me, tears threatening to spill out of his eyes, face ashen.
“Hey,” I coax. “It’s okay. Nothing to be worried about.”
James shakes his head and looks down. A sniffle seems to actually compose him, and he looks up at me. “Vita, I’m so sorry. If I would have known, I would have warned you.”
Still hazy, I recall my experience in the meadow with the solider boy. Before speaking, I resolve to never let myself be that helpless again. Starting right now. Just like James said, I will be the one doing the breaking. Well, maybe not right now. After I recover from whatever this is.
“Warned me about what?”
“The dazers,” he practically whispers, but I still hear the George’s tongue cluck from the computer station. His disapproval is thick. “You passed out on the steps. I couldn’t wake you up. When I brought you here, I thought you were dead.”
“Yes, the drugs caused your heart to race,” the wizard explains, less emotionally. His eyes never leave the tablet in his hands. “Your heart didn’t care for that so it shut down...for a bit.”
“It shut down?” I echo as panic begins to rise from my toes.
“Only for a moment.” His hand waves dismissively. “Everything’s fine.” The Old One smirks, finally looking up at me as he turns my own words around on me.
“I died?”
“For a second.” George holds up two fingers very close together in an attempt to keep us positive.
Whoosh. “I came as soon as I heard.” Long brown hair whirls through the room. Mom busies herself snatching the tablet and replacing James at the side of my bed. She grasps my hand, leans in, and begins examining my eyes. I have no idea what they look like, but her fear and disgust focus across the room. “George, thank the stars you are still here! How could this have happened? I’m not even sure what this means.” She shakes the tablet at him, the data revealing itself to me shortly. “Where was she? Who was with her?”
James makes a move to step forward and the Old One stops him. “She was just doing as I instructed. Taking time off. Meeting new people. Trying out a party. I’m sorry. I didn’t know she would be confronted with...substances.”
Mom visibly calms down. I guess maybe she couldn’t be too angry with the man who had just saved her daughter’s life? She lays the tablet down gently. “What can I do for her?”
“Nothing, I’m afraid. The drugs have to work their way through her system. She won’t be able to start training until they are flushed out. Her new friends just may have bought her enough time to completely restore before the next round.”
My eyelids feel as though they are made of lead. My hand is nestled between stronger ones. I fight to stay awake behind the fading light.
“What will we ever do without you?” My mother’s whisper floats across the room to me.
His firm response slices through the darkness closing in around me. “The director has plans but so do we. Stick to the plan. Thanks to your husband’s—ex-husband’s—news story, she’s about ready to enter a world where everyone knows her and what she can do. She needs you two more than ever.”
I didn’t know then that when I awoke, it would be to a new world. A world without George, without visits from my dad, and without panic attacks. A world where I was a celebrity, a scientific wonder, and no longer alone. Never mind that I put my life at risk each time I pushed one the boundaries of human capability. I lived by the words I was never meant to hear:

Romy strained for any hint of disturbance, but an eerie calm filled the space.
The electrodes and wires covering her arms and legs suddenly felt like restraints—a barrier preventing her from leaping from the bed and protecting herself. She closed her eyes and attempted to regulate her breathing.

Extracting herself in a hurry wasn’t looking like an option. Heavy footsteps approached the bed where she lay, frozen. Mind racing. Several sets of footsteps, she realised—maybe ten. Romy swallowed, palms sweating where they touched her bare thighs.
A large shadow fell across her body.
Dread settled heavy in her bones.
A man dressed in solid black leaned over the bed, blotting her view of the white ceiling. A soldier. Unlike any she’d seen. Why wasn’t he dressed in white?
The man’s face was clean-shaven and as his scent reached her, she got the oddest sense of another time. Of warmth and. . . .
She blinked into his soft grey eyes.
With careful movements, the man moved the gun he carried so it slung across his back. The weapon was small, sleek—the complete opposite of the huge laser guns fitted on the space station.

He reached for her, expression impassive, a slight tremor in his hands.

About the Author:

About the Author: From the time she was old enough to talk, Katy Newton Naas has been creating characters and telling stories. As a child, they sometimes got her into trouble. She knew she wanted to write books when she won a Young Author's competition as a second-grader for her short story titled, "The Grape Pie." (Don't let its tasty title fool you - it was actually a sad little tale!) Katy devoured books as a child and young adult, always doing chores and odd jobs in order to make enough money to buy more of them. Though she continues to age, her true literature love is and has always been children's and young adult fiction. Katy currently teaches middle school reading and high school English in southern Illinois, as well as children's church.
